Kallah

Kallah offers a deep Judaic experience in which participants are given the opportunity to explore their own Jewish identity and engage with spirituality, culture and religion. The Kallah experience strives to provide a well-rounded exposure to some of the core principles, values and tenets of Jewish life. Kallah brings together a faculty of some of the most talented educators, artists, thinkers and creative minds that the Jewish community has to offer, and also provides teens with a forum to learn from and work with one another to delve deeper into the aspects of Judaism that they find meaningful. The program requires no background in formal Jewish education – in fact the Kallah community flourishes through the diversity of its participants and their experiences, traditions and knowledge. Teens will emerge from the Kallah program with a strong sense of self, but also of Kehillah (community), feeling connected to their fellow participants through bonds and friendships that will last for years to come.

Program Highlights

  • Dynamic educators from all backgrounds provide teens with a strong overview of not only various topics, but also different points of view.
  • Participants choose many of their classes and find a connection in ways that are meaningful to them.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to work together, with educators providing advice and resources to investigate an issue, learn about it, and then share their findings with a larger group of participants. This experience will allow teens to see that they are capable of creating a meaningful learning experience for their peers.
  • From the first song to the last Havdallah candle, Shabbat is planned entirely by participants (with the guidance of educators, of course). Kallah is a very intensely focused program, and participants and staff alike work to create a true separation from a week of hard work to Shabbat, where we have the chance to rest.
  • The Kallah staff includes specialists in songleading and Jewish music, folk dancing, two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, creative writing, drama, and more.
  • Past programs and guests have included a Jewish storyteller and Bible Raps – a group that teaches Torah study through rap music.
  • Participants will be offered the opportunity to be Bar/Bat Mitzvahed at Kallah, should they so choose. The support and encouragement that they receive from their peers is truly unique.

Location

Perlman Camp (Lake Como, PA)

Perlman Camp is located in the northeastern corner of Pennsylvania, just 3 hours from New York City and Philadelphia and 5 hours from Washington DC. Our lush fields, pristine forests and spring-fed lake, form the perfect backdrop for an exceptional summer of friendship, learning and fun.

Camp B'nai B'rith opened in Starlight, Pennsylvania in 1954. When B'nai B'rith International opened a second camp in Wisconsin in 1977, we were renamed Perlman Camp, in honor of Anita and Louis Perlman. Although our mailing address was reassigned as Lake Como in 2005, our true home will always be under the blanket of stars that makes Starlight famous.
